Clearly confuddled.

That clearly didn't work

Hah, so much for updating my journal regularly. What a failed comeback that was. I'm not very good at doing anything really, am I?

Anyway, in the spirit of updating my journal I shall detail how my life stands. I'm facing a decision about what to do with myself, and could use some constructive input.

How things are:

I'm living with my wonderful girlfriend Liz (Mythara). This is wonderful. What's not so great is that we're living with her parents.

We live about 25 miles away from the edge of Aberdeen, where Liz and I both work. She works at Lloyd's Register and I work at ASDA. Wooo. Basically, she makes about twice as much money as I do, and has lots more interesting stuff to do. I shouldn't be annoyed about that, but it makes me feel a bit pathetic. The distance from the city is obviously an issue, as it essentially means we can't do much. Luckily I drive, so we can get where we need to go, but it still means we can't go for a night out ever as I need to drive us home. I've been here for about a year now, probably a bit more, and have never once been out in Aberdeen.

Other than Liz, I really know nobody up here. I chat with my friends from back home and elsewhere via IRC, although as we're in constant contact it's never really a conversation - more like friendly insults as we pass through more often than not.

I tried uni 3 years ago and quit. At the time my reasoning for this was that I wasn't learning anything in that first year of Computer Science (which is true) but now I see that it's more than just that. I've always been a computer-y person, and always really assumed that was the way I'm meant to go. I've always worked with computers, therefore that must be right for me. Right? No, not really. I used to enjoy programming, now the most I do is some basic PHP when building websites. I used to enjoy learning about the technical side of computers, but would much rather keep that as a hobby now.

I enrolled on a CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) course through the Open University in March (i think). The reason for this is one simple thing - it looks great on a CV. Does that matter now that I don't want a job working in that area? Probably not - it'd still look good. It hasn't gone well as I've had no interest in keeping up to date with the modules, and I've now missed 3 out of 4 residential school days - so I've completely failed the course and it's not even over yet. £545 wasted.

I used to be a very creative person. I still am to a certain extent, but really have no motivation to do anything at the moment. I enjoy creating things, and know I have a good eye for visual design, but haven't had any ideas really worth doing. I've made a couple of website designs, nothing revolutionary, and nothing that really pushes what I would say is my ability.

Looking to the future:

I'm now looking to move away from all of my computer-related job hunting, education and all. I would love to become more actively creative again and it's something I'll be trying to push over the next few weeks.

I don't think it was uni itself that I didn't like.. I think the reason I left was because I really didn't enjoy comp sci. I'm considering doing a Graphic Design course up here now. Has anyone else taken a few years out and then gone to uni? I'd like to hear how it went, and why you took those years away from it.

Now is the time I should be applying, whether I've made my mind up or not. These are the courses I'm considering:
Graphic Design
Design for Digital Media
60 places on the first, 20 on the second. As with most arty courses they require an interview with portfolio of work to show ability. It'll be tough to get one of those places, but I think I should give it a shot. Those courses really do sound interesting to me, and I really think I could put in a lot of effort and get a rewarding experience out of it.

As far as my portfolio goes - I have nothing. I'm struggling at the moment for any ideas. Visualising and realising concepts isn't something I have difficulty, it's coming up with the ideas in the first place. It's just not happening for me at the moment. Maybe someone reading this has a suggestion or two for where to start? What the uni will be looking for?

That's about it for now.. who knows. Maybe you'll see some submissions from me in the near future. If you do, then I'm doing better and my portfolio might be taking shape. If not.. I don't know what I'll be doing. Probably very little.
